Pearl
At Ravenhill Studio, the Pearl Sconce Family was developed to anchor the studio’s newest lighting line while expanding its adaptability across different contexts. Craig contributed throughout design development, prototyping, and technical fabrication—helping translate Brendan Ravenhill’s design vision into production-ready fixtures. His role included CAD modeling, refining prototypes, coordinating fabrication, and ensuring that the sconces balanced visual refinement with technical performance.
The Pearl line grew into a versatile family of fixtures built around the Lamé Curve, a geometric form midway between a square and a circle, also known as the “squircle.” Variants included the Pearl 4, the core of the series, Pearl 6 as a larger option, and Pearl 6 ADA, which maintained the same depth as Pearl 4 but scaled up to meet accessibility requirements. Additional versions such as Pearl Reeded introduced a fluted glass texture, and Pearl Seamless was designed as a trimless fixture that could be mudded directly into plaster walls or integrated into wood paneling for a minimal appearance.
Mounting options further expanded the system’s flexibility, with small and large sconce canopies in brass, aluminum, or painted finishes, a pull-chain variant for hands-on operation, and the trimless version developed from the ground up as a new fixture type for the studio. These variations allowed Pearl to be applied across residential, hospitality, and commercial interiors while maintaining a consistent design language.
Craig’s contributions helped refine both the sculptural and technical qualities of the line—guiding the adaptation of prototypes into manufacturable assemblies, resolving details around wiring and installation, and coordinating fabrication methods to align with UL certification requirements. The Pearl Sconce Family debuted as part of a lobby renovation for an early 1900s Art Deco building in San Francisco, where reinforced concrete walls and the challenges of retrofitting within a former bank vault demanded inventive solutions. The completed space included two seating areas, a kitchenette, and custom cabinetry, with Pearl fixtures installed as sculptural focal points throughout, demonstrating the adaptability of the line and marking its place within Ravenhill Studio’s growing body of work.
